Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Sabah, The Cara draws inspiration from its surroundings to craft spaces of quiet elegance and thoughtful design. Each room reflects the region’s natural wonders, from Mount Kinabalu’s majestic presence to the tranquillity of ancient rainforests and the rhythmic tides of its pristine shores.
Designed for both comfort and purpose, The Cara invites guests to immerse themselves in the essence of Sabah, creating an experience where nature, tranquillity, and a sense of belonging intertwine.

The Founders
Lainey is a Hong Kong entrepreneur with an artistic spirit and a background spanning finance, education, technology, and hospitality. Beginning her entrepreneurial journey at 19, she combines commercial discipline with a creative vision. The Cara Hotel represents a deeply personal ambition: bringing to life in Sabah a dream she could not realise in Hong Kong. With exacting standards for brand identity and the guest experience, she approaches every detail with intention—from the character of each space to the smallest service interaction. Her vision is to create more than a beautiful hotel: a place with a distinctive identity, where design evokes emotion and hospitality feels personal.
Her entrepreneurial achievements have been recognised with honours including Outstanding Business Female Leader and the Smartest Business Award in 2023, Greater Bay Area Woman Entrepreneur in 2024, and World Outstanding Chinese Young Entrepreneur, Global Outstanding Chinese Youth, and Outstanding Entrepreneur in 2025.
Founded in 2016, Wowspace is a Sabah-based multidisciplinary design studio, led here by Henry (left), Kenny (middle) and Carol (right). Bringing together backgrounds in interior design, architecture and hospitality, the team believes great design should always move people.
For The Cara, the team imagined a calm counterpoint to the city, a resort feeling within an urban setting. Sabah's landscapes are interpreted through atmosphere rather than literal imagery: earth-toned palettes, and natural, weathered materials such as wood, stone, clay and rattan, used with restraint. Across eight themed room expressions, guests move gently from shared, communal spaces into private retreat.
Design, to them, is lived experience, guided by clarity, restraint and sensitivity to place, with human connection at the centre. Their work has been recognised by the International Property Awards, including Malaysia Region Winner for 2026-2027, and Asia Pacific Regional Winner and Malaysia Region Winner for 2024-2025.
